Fatal Crash: 58-Year-Old ID'd As Victim In Riverhead

One person was killed in a midday crash on a busy Long Island roadway.

It happened around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 in Riverhead.

A 2015 Nissan Sentra owned by Riverhead Town Taxi had been traveling eastbound on Route 58, just east of Northville Turnpike. 

After passing through the intersection, the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the roadway from the north side to the south side.

The pedestrian, who was identified as Jaime Martin Santos, age 58, of Riverhead, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police said. 

A rear passenger in the taxi, a 49-year-old Riverhead woman, was also treated at the scene by Riverhead Ambulance and transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. 

The driver of the taxi, who was identified a 43-year-old Riverhead man, was not injured.

Riverhead PD detectives responded to the scene and an investigation was conducted with the assistance of the NYSP Forensic Investigation Unit, resulting in a road closure for several hours. 

No charges have been filed in connection with the accident and the investigation is still ongoing.
